Types of Stone Settings: Bezel, Prong, Pavé, Channel, & More

There are many factors that go into choosing jewelry. When a piece has a stone, like a diamond, it is rarely just the diamond that catches your eye. The design of your jewelry is just as important as what it’s made of. How a stone is set influences the feel of the piece.

Bezel

One of the most classic settings is a bezel setting. A thin rim of gold flawlessly surrounds the stone to secure it in place. This style creates a clean, modern look and is durable while still low profile. It’s perfect for anyone looking for something simple or for everyday accessorizing.

Prong

Prong settings, on the other hand, let the stone breathe. Another popular setting, this one uses slim gold arms to cradle the stone. With this design, more of the stone is visible, meaning the shape and cut of the stone is more prominent allowing for a lifted effect that many people gravitate toward. There’s usually between 3 to 6 prongs used and is perfect for center stones.

Pavé

Pavé is one of the more subtle settings. This setting require micro-precision due to the stones being set closely together and held by tiny beads of gold. Pavé settings create a soft, delicate look for any piece of jewelry. The highly detailed structure is perfect for someone who likes texture with a dazzling finish.

Inlay

Inlay settings offer an artist approach that is more structural. This style of setting allows the stone to be set flush within a carved space creating a smooth, uninterrupted surface. It feels more intentional and contemporary. Inlay settings are known to highlight bold or unusual materials and shapes, making them great for a statement piece.

Channel

Channel settings give an architectural design where the stones are lined up neatly in between to walls of gold. No prongs or beads needed! The row of stones are protected within the gold frame. This style of setting is popular for ring bands and bracelets due to the security they provide and polished feel.

Flush

Another minimalist favorite is the flush setting. This setting is minimal like a channel setting and secure like a bezel. Each stone in this setting are embedded into the metal so that it sits level with the surface. Another perfect choice for everyday wear that won’t snag or catch on clothing or hair.
