Signet rings have a rich history. Records show that Mesopotamia created the first versions of a signet. Instead of a ring, they would use a cylindrical seal as mark of authenticity. Ancient Egypt updated the cylinder with a ring as a seal for Pharaohs and other high ranking people to show their status.
The original construction of the signet ring was made with soft stone and ivory and later evolved to harder stones and eventually metals thanks to the Bronze Age. Some even thought of the ring as art and began collecting the rings.
Eventually, the look and embellishments of signet rings became more intricate. Gemstone, rotating bezels, and family crests were more prominent on the rings to show you were of higher class. Because the rings were used to sign documents, most unique rings from the Middle Ages were destroyed with their owners to ensure documents were not forged after death.
Today, signet rings are worn for many reasons: individuality, as a fashion statement, and/or as a family heirloom. At Zoe Lev, we have many versions of personalized signet rings.
